Hello all! First post here in about 5 years, Yikes!

I've been looking for a replacement HDD for my tower PC, I had replaced it once a couple of years back, but now, I have my doubts about it too. It gets up to around 52°C (With my monitor software displaying a fire icon, lol) And I've heard less than favorable things about the brand's drives. It's a 7200RPM Hitachi DeskStar 1TB I bought as a server-pull years ago.

I'm currently looking at Getting either a 1+TB HDD or ~512GB SSD in the 3.5" form factor. Are there any good brands models I should be aware of? I'm a bit weary of Toshiba's drive's as I've had bad luck with them before as well (More than once). I have had pretty good luck with Western Digital drives, although I'm not quite sure of the difference between their "Green" "Blue" "Black" "Gold" and "Red" Series. Is it disk Speed? I thought I'd read the Black series were more performance oriented, but I've seen better reviews on the 'Blue' series drives wherever I've looked. Is Western Digital still a good brand nowadays? Or should I look to Seagate or even Samsung?

My system is a Dell Dimension E520 with the following specs

  • 5GB RAM
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 @2.66Ghz
    Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit
    MSi/AMD Radeon 6450 1GB Graphics

Thanks all!!

WD blue for the harddrive, if you go that route.
Samsung 860 EVO for the SSD. I would probably recommend a TB SSD if you can afford it, theyve been down to 110 bucks the past few weeks.

there is no such thing as a 3.5" SSD. But an SSD is still mountable in a 3.5" HDD drive cage.

But seeing as how you have this old Dell it may not work out that way.

An SSD would make OS interactivity much better. But high capacity is going to cost you.

So for affordability a 500GB SSD or a 2TB HDD

Crucuial MX500 500GB SSD - $75 (no tax unless living in NY or NJ)

Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM HDD - $60 (plus tax)

MX500 is at the very least on par with an 860 EVO and in a lot of cases better and costs less.

Unless talking about the 1TB option. Then you save $5 going with 860 EVO

Oh ok, I thought I'd seen one before for sale over at ebay though it stated it was explicitly for use in some certain application I think involved RAID. Anyhow, I guess I can always get an adapter. And if the prices are down as Gam3r01 said, i might as well go for an SSD. I know the EVO series is good anyhow, from what i've heard! Are Toshiba's OCZ SSD series of drives good as well? I think I've seen a couple sales on them too. Thanks!

I'm not especially impressed with Crucial's SSDs, I had gotten an used/pulled one, otherwise I'd be all over that because they make great RAM and such. I hadn't even known WD made SSD storage til a couple days ago. I appreciate all the input! I'll look into Samsung's EVO and check out that especially lucrative $110 Price range, I'd say that's worth it.

Thanks again all!
