What are ssd's good for?

It's the next iteration of drive type.
8" floppy
5.25" floppy
3.5" floppy
HDD
SSD
Now, we're getting into various iteration of "SSD". SATA III, NVMe, Optane...

Think of it as a regular hard drive, but faster.

And if you're wondering if it's worth it the answer is definitely yes, it's one of the best upgrade you can do to an existing PC, and I personally consider an SSD to be mandatory in any new PC. The typical usage scenario is to use the SSD for windows, application and games if it's big enough.
And to have a secondary mechanical hard drive for extra data storage. (if required)

Exactly.
I wouldn't build a PC today without one or more.

After using an SSD, using a system with only HDD's is like watching paint dry.

I edit this response to be more relevant for todays sake.
Any strike threw means null and void.
[strike]All of the SSD's I have are 2.5" SATA3 Drives of assorted sizes ranging from 250G to 1TB, There are a total of 9 SSD's[/strike].
[strike]need to pickup a buddy of my at work, back in 60min.[/strike]

Yes I agree, storing ones and zeros, mmm, maybe disposable?
More to come in my next response to USAFRet.
Thanks For Your Response, luckymatt42

So you already have and use SSD's?
Completely unsure of what your original question meant.

As far as the typical usage scenario is to use the SSD for windows, application and games if it's big enough.

Is one of the main reasons for my original post!
I have see a lot of that and with that setup (1SSD/1HDD) claiming to do everything from general surfing to 4k video editing.
When others say no to such things as 4k video editing and what you want is some sort raid setup of a 0+1 or 5 or 6 or 10/30/50 and more raids, more than I care to remember at the moment.
I believe with all these different ways of doing things is possible whether with a single SSD/HDD setup and/or multi. HDD's steup. But the SSD/HDD for video editing or 4K at the least,??? sometimes I wonder what gives?

I try to respond to all replies, so sorry for the delay I have been ill.

Thank You For Your Response: dalaran

I've never done any video editing so I'm not sure what the requirements for that are on the hard drive side of things, especially at 4k where files will most likely be huge and where both the disk read and write speed will most likely matter quite a bit. You might have a better chance to get a meaningful answers if you start a new thread asking what are the recommended storage configurations for a system that's indented to handle 4k video editing. My guest would be to stick to an SSD for the OS, but beyond that I'm not sure it's highly dependent on the amount of space you need for video editing, and how much files you intend to edit and keep long term. Overall it's going to be highly dependant on your requirements and budget
As a minimum I would guess
1 SSD for OS + working / scratch directory of the video editing application (Most likely 500Gb or more)
1 Drive for media storage (a few TB, depending on how much media you intend to keep)

As for raid I'd avoid it unless you know what you're doing, it can help to obtain more performance and / or add tolerance to a drive failure, but it's more complicated to setup and increases the cost of the storage solution since additional drives are required to add redundancy and to balance the load between multiple drives, it might be worth it for someone who does video editing professionally, but other than that I'm not convinced. So again it's depends on your intended usage.

Good luck

You are pretty much correct in that a large enough SSD for the OS, working with the video files you are editing, and for any games you may want installed on it is the way to go. Then a large HDD for storing all your other files, videos, and games.

No need to start another thread. This is all related to the same question regarding SSDs.

Well put dalaran!

I was just using 4k as an example, I wouldn't be working with 4k myself, I should have stated that, my bad.

Thank Again dalaran

Thanks for holding the thread volkgren.

If I may ask a few questions about your response to dalaran ?
What is the difference between, pretty much correct and correct?
What would be a large enough SSD for Your needs other than the biggest you could get or afford?
I guess I would be working on the SSD with OS/Games/Video/whatever and then when finished store to HDD?

Thanks Again volkgren

I apologize for the long delay (again) USAFRet

Yes I have 9 ssd's not 10: 2x 850evo 250Gb , 3x 850evo 500Gb , 2x 860evo, 2x 1Tb 860evo.
No, I have never used SSD's, no joke.
( I also have 2x 1TB WD Blacks and 2x 4TB WD Blacks all unused)
I thank everyone who have replied to the post. Good info.and insight was straight up and people trying to help!!!

May lose this thread now but I hope not!

USAFRet once in another I was asking about compatibility with the drives listed above and solved it.
You showed layout of your system and everything was SSD, I imagine you have some sort of backup.
I was wondering, would you like to help further into my build concerning drive configuration and well maybe whatever, I do believe I would appreciate it?
And I guess anyone who might want to throw their 2 cents worth or more in.

I understand more info. would be needed from me.

Thank You: USAFRet

Yes, I have a good backup routine.
In fact, I had to use it just yesterday. One of my SSD's died abruptly. No warning, no slow down, no read only mode...just, dead.

Put in a new drive, opened Macrium Reflect. Click click, wait 2 hours.
Bingo, the entire contents of the old drive (605GB), exactly as it was at 4AM that morning.

It took 2 hours, because it was reading that data from my NAS box, across the LAN.

but seriously, can you be a bit more specific with your question?
Well luckymatt42 I'll try. I guess In the beginning when I first posted, I thought I was going to receive some magical answer to the concerns in my mind about drives due to other factors involved such as Noise, Etc..., that wouldn't have anything to do with a SSD per say and therefore leads to more of a Building a Computer Thread or Question Post.

But it is all still good, I learned some and some things about SSD's are obvious. Like you say; what else is there?

Thank You: luckymatt42

And we are a bit confused about your original question.
"What are ssd's good for??? "

And then you say:
"Yes I have 9 ssd's"

But then:
"No, I have never used SSD's, no joke."

:heink:

And we are a bit confused about your original question.
"What are ssd's good for??? "

Well it looks like they are good for about anything you want to do if all things allowing.

And then you say:
"Yes I have 9 ssd's"

True!

But then:
"No, I have never used SSD's, no joke."

True!

Due to money constraints and life in general it's taken roughly 3+ years to get all the parts I needed for the system build right or wrong, that's why I'm here. Last part to get was PSU which I have now, have an old test bench to self post with but wouldn't want to use the PSU it for a new build it's about 5 years old.

Plus I've truly, have never worked with SSD's. What can I say? I'm a dumb!!!?

Seen a lot of stuff on youtube and a lot of clowns but there's good on youtube, also hit a lot of web sites for info.
I have read many an article and a lot of them have different opinions.
I have had conversations with Newegg/B&H/Tiger Direct, etc...
The trouble there is though they all want you to buy something even if it's not what your asking about, but if they do you get or at least I do.
(what you need is a Raid enclosure with some Red Drives or a 4TB external Lacie or put all those SSD's in a Raid 0 and you'll be good to go!) Two of which here aren't even SSD's.

So I came here hoping to find some clarity and when I saw your drive setup of SSD's, looked like a person who might know what their doing being that you are working with 6 SSD's in your main system.

Maybe I should of asked something like Best ways to use SSD's or something?

but I hope, this helps clear things up.

Thank You: USAFRet
