[SOLVED] Connecting a M.2 SATA3 SSD to Slim Sata connector via adapter cable?

Okay, so as part of my eGPU modifications I need to vacate the M.2 PCIE slot on my laptop's motherboard. Currently this slot is occupied by an m.2 SSD which is my boot drive but this SSD only runs via SATA bus despite being M.2 form factor and fitting in an m.2 PCIE slot. What I plan to do is remove my laptop's DVD drive and connect the SSD to the Slim SATA port via adapter cable(s). However, I'm confused about a few things:

-Do I need to also have the power supplying part of the Slim SATA connector to be connected to the M.2 SSD or is only the data link required for the SSD to be powered?
-Assuming the connection is successful, will I need to go into BIOS to change the boot order if I've simply moved where the boot drive is plugged in?

Also, there is a thermal pad that sticks to my SSD and the other side sticks to the laptop casing. I doubt this is contributing much to cooling the SSD at all, is it likely to be safe to just go without this thermal pad? half of it isn't even touching the storage chips.

Solution
A drive needs both data and power.
What is the specific drive in this? m.2 may be either NVMe or SATA.

If your laptop has only a single m.2 port...your options are very, very limited regarding an eGPU and an m.2 drive.
