Hey guys, I am considering getting an Intel Core i7 6700K this Christmas season but I am unsure as to how wise a move it is, considering that most mainstream processors have moved on to 6 cores.

My current rig is the following:

MSI B150A Gaming Pro (updated to latest BIOS)
Intel Core i3 6100 (stock at 3.7GHz)
MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6G
Corsair DDR4 16Gb 2133MHz
EVGA 500W Bronze Certified

I use my PC exclusively for gaming, playing titles such as Hitman 2, Battlefield V, Injustice 2, Star Wars Battlefront II and The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (and, hopefully it comes out on PC: Red Dead Redemption 2 in the future).

My current processor is tapped out and unable to cope with the abovementioned titles at 1080p 60FPS and I am at a crossroads: either go for a stock 6700K at about 300 Euro or, for the same price, jump ship to AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and a B450 motherboard (at slightly less than 300 Euro).

Keeping in mind that I use the PC only for gaming, what would you guys suggest? Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 5?

P.S. I have an OCD for Ultra settings and 60 FPS. :)

Cheers! Looking forward to your thoughts.

This is a tough one...Right now, if you can find a second hand 6700 or 6700K cheap on ebay or the like, then that would be the simple option and would provide an immediate boost over the 6100..Remember the 6700 or 6700K are still fantastic gaming CPU's....Do not buy at Euro 300 as that is just way too much for an older gen CPU and you should be able to find them second hand for a lot less..

Finally on upgrading to a newer gen platform, you have 2 options, one costing a more and one less...The fact that you have OCD (love it) for Ultra at 60FPS then Ryzen 2600 coupled to decent DDR4 3000 or 3200 RAM will get you 1080p 60FPS Ultra give or take on some games..and is most definitely a great options especially on the value side.

The more...

1- never get old CPU new , look for it in the used market like Ebay and other local sites and get a used one half price

2- B150 Motherboard will not overclock the CPU there is no need to get the 6700K , just get th i7 6700 which can be found used for less than 200 euros

3- yo can find AMD 1700 X (8 cores 16 threads) for as low as 180 Euros !!! in EU .. so it is a better Choice to get AMD ryzen 7 1700X and a motherboard , dont get the 2600

Unless you can find a used 6700(k)/7700(k) for much less than 300 euro, you're better off getting a new CPU/mobo, either Intel or Ryzen. Something to note is that Ryzen CPUs tend to like fast RAM, so your 2133 MHz memory isn't going to be optimal if you go the AMD route.

The more expensive route is the 8600K/9600K which will guarantee frames well above 60FPS at 1080P Ultra at all times....

With a bit of shopping around you can reduce the price on both a little...

Thanks for all your answers guys, they're very helpful! One detail I forgot to mention is that I live in Malta so Newegg doesn't ship to where I live and Amazon does have some rather steep shipping costs accompanying the items. I really only wanted to change the processor only or, at the most, get a Ryzen 5 and change processor and motherboard...but not much more than that as that would eat into my solid state drive budget (I'm planning to get a 1 TB).

Say I get a 6700K at a good price, what would the ceiling be in terms of graphics card before I'm CPU limited again?

Cheers guys, thanks for the PC lists and your insights.
