CPU constantly overheating and shutting down after bad cleanup.

I have an intel core i5 6400 processor that me, being the noob I am, tried to clean. I removed the fan and heatsink and mistakenly removed the thermal paste from it (thought it was coagulated dust).
Then, I used the processor for a few months more with slight overheating issues. Yesterday, I cleaned the PC again and removed the processor itself, then put it back again in the socket. Now after starting, the computer overheats rapidly and then shows a bsod.
What is the chance that the processor is damaged and beyond repair, or the mobo is, or just installing new coolants will fix this issue?
P.S - In uefi menu, the temperature stays around 45 to 50 (stayed that way for almost 30 min)

Hopefully it still works, Doing some research into how building a pc works before you do anything else would be my suggestion not trying to beat you down but its always good to know these things so problems like this one don't happen.
Look up on how to apply thermal paste etc so then you know for certain.

You honestly hit the IHS/heatsink jackpot the first time around if it was able to run without paste. That's some seriously good contact. My guess is you weren't able to get the same contact when you cleaned it the second time. Just add some paste and it should be fine, but yes, you could have permanently damaged it. Don't start it again until you reapply paste.
