Hello guys. I am currently searching for a gaming laptop that will be able to play arma 3 king of the hill. I have been doing a ton of research and I dont know whether to settle on an i5 processor with a gtx 1060 or aim for the i7 with gtx 1050ti. Ive noticed that most laptops have that type of combo and are around $600-$800 which is a very good price for me. I wish to have 40+ fps but it is really hard to find reviews on the combos provided. I would really like to stay under $1000 so I need help deciding on what to look for that will please my needs. I also have a gaming desktop that runs arma 3 fine, it has the i7 4790k and r9 280x combo. Due to the fact that I am barely home now. I wish to find a gaming laptop to use outside of my home. I will be using this laptop for school also.

Here's and ASUS that has a GTX 1060 and i5 for $800
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-FX503-Gaming-Laptop-FX503VM-NS52/dp/B07CK1Q71Z/

Identical specs but from Dell for $800
https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-7577-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B07GFPNZTM/

This one is MSI and is $100 cheaper but you are limited to only having a 256GB SSD and no HDD
https://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-GV62-Performance-Gaming-Laptop-15-6-Intel-Core-Gen-i5-8300-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1060-3G-256GB-NVMe-SSD-8GB-RAM-Windows-10-Black-GV62061-Fortnite-Bu/202194529

Honestly, I would say to get the MSI and add in some storage later, because it's the best deal so far. The i5 in the first two is the 7300HQ and that is only 4c/4t

But the MSI has the i5-8300H which is newer and has 4c/8t...

a GTX 1050 isn't going to get you anywhere with a game like that.
At the least a 1050 Ti will let you play on lower graphic settings at 1080p.

And having an i7 is always a good thing.
However, I don't know whether or not the i7 of choice is a proper gaming laptop i7 that has 4 cores and 8 threads or is a 2 core with 4 threads CPU.
Some are even 4 core 4 thread and that would be better than the dual core.

So if it's a choice between the two, I would go for the 1050 Ti with i7.

But if you tell me what country you are in, I can try to provide you with a recommendation.

I live in the US and the cpu was going to possibly be an i7 8750h or less or better

For an add in HDD you have two choices for limited funds:

1TB 7200rpm Seagate - $61
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078TJ17QF/

2TB 5400rpm WD Blue - $81
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LX13P71/

$20 more for 2TB but also at the cost of hard drive speed.

at worst, if the tax rate where you live is 10%, the total cost after taxes for the MSI laptop and the 1TB HDD will be about $837.

If the tax rate where you live is lower than 10% then it will cost less.

This is the best bang for buck in my opinion, and definitely puts you under your $1000 budget while getting you a 4c/8t CPU, a GTX 1060, 256GB SSD, and 1TB HDD.

So if you were to recommend a better laptop then the ones provided would that be $1000+? For laptop cpus/gpus I have no clue what to really pay attention to. I was looking more at the mhz for the cpu. Also I was wondering if there would be any point in attempting to overclock the cpus for more speed?

The tax rate where I live is between 7% and 8% I believe. But either way I can possibly get away with $900 for a gaming laptop. The only problem is I am not too sure yet so I need a variety of options and it would help if I had the ABSOLUTE best option, like a laptop that can run arma 3 on high settings with 30+ fps. I know that my ping on most servers is around 60-90. I also know that arma is very cpu heavy so the laptop cpu has to be really good. I am not sure if the intel tubo does anything. But if I have to I can attempt to overclock a cpu that can go up to at least 4.0 ghz if possible. Please forgive me if I am using mhz and ghz wrong for the cpu's I am still a newbie with all of this.

can only overclock if the CPU is overclockable.
And on a lot of gaming laptops, this isn't possible.

However, the turbo of the 8300H is really good.

You could find something that packs in a higher end GPU for more money of course, but you shouldn't be expecting that much of a laptop anyways.
Since to really benefit from higher end gaming on a laptop, you have to plug it in and that just ends up making it stationary (because battery won't last very long when under heavy load while gaming) and at that point, might as well get better hardware in a desktop.
Unless you want the portability for moving around a lot from place to place.

And if willing to spend over $1K, you would just be better off with a desktop unless your life doesn't afford you the luxury of having a tower sitting stationary because you have to move around a lot.

Otherwise, you will get good performance at 1080p 60fps with medium to high settings depending on the game you play with the MSI laptop.

Ohh okay. Well thank your for your help. Im kinda stressing out on which to pick because Im trying to get a laptop that will not disappoint. I will look at the msi laptop and most likely do the upgrade on it. Hopefully it performs well enough for me.

Great thing about either of these builds is that you can overclock the CPU compared to the laptop, and the GPU can be overclocked a lot farther than on the laptop as well without dealing with the thermal issues of the laptop.

For more budget minded build, can get this too where you keep it down to a 1060, but also drop the monitor down to 60hz and drop the RAM down to 8GB and drop the HDD down to 1TB

While even this more budget minded build costs more than the MSI laptop + add in HDD, the performance will be a lot stronger out of the box for both the CPU and GPU, and the overclocking will only push that performance higher.

Cool thanks! By the way I seen on the msi that that geforce graphics card has 3gb and not the 6gb I was wondering if you meant to put the 6gb version

no. a 6GB card in a laptop costs more. Most any laptop you find with a 1060 is the 3GB version.
Which is another reason why building a desktop is better simply because you have more options to pick and choose what hardware you want and at better cost, but at the cost of portability.

Ahh I see, I wish it did not up the price soo much... I also already have a tower setup for gaming. I just need a gaming laptop since I am barely home now. So there is no other laptop that has the 6gb version geforce under $1000? I really should have got everything on cyber Monday but did not have any money at the time for it.

this is as cheap as I can find with a 1060 6GB.
There is slightly cheaper options by like $30 that doesn't include an HDD, but not worth it.

There are a couple of other options that come down to $900 but sacrifice HDD and end up going down to 7th gen 4c/8t i7 which isn't worth what you save since the 8th gen i7 is just way better.

So I cant expect much from a gaming laptop of course... But IF I can slide in a little bit more money and be able to buy a laptop slightly over $1000 like $1100 and less. It would be the legion?? It is very hard. Many people say just get a computer that has a cpu with at least 3.5+ ghz and a decent graphics card (preferably a nvdia gtx). In my desktop I have a i7 4790k cpu. So is there a cpu in a laptop that is close with the 4790k that is in my price range or no. Sorry about all the questions I just need to figure out if its even possible to get decent fps with arma 3 on a low budget laptop thats not some ridiculous amount of money.

the lenovo one I found has the 1060 6GB for the cheapest price with the higher end CPU and an HDD.

Can shave off some cost with the model that doesn't come with an HDD but you won't be adding in your own HDD since the amount you save would be less than the cost of buying your own HDD.

The other model that has no HDD and costs a little bit less is the one that has a 512GB SSD.

So far, with the rollback on it, the lenovo I linked is the best bang for buck under $1K. But with taxes it pushes the total cost just slightly past that $1K.
You're not really going to find much better for only $100 more than your initial budget.

Hmm. Okay I will probably try and get the lenovo seeing it is better. Just not trying to end up making the wrong purchase when the best one is right there.
