Hello guys i ve got a problem with my recently built PC. My CPU is overheating and when idling no matter if OC or not i am getting temperatures from 45-50 degrees and when gaming 75-90 degrees celsius.
I am using CPU cooler Noctua NH-U12S case from CM masterbox lite 5 and 4 Corsair 120LL Fans my GPU is doing fine (1080Ti) from Gigabyte getting 45 when idle and 75 max when gaming on ultra almost on everything. Regarding this cooling i am really not sure why am I getting so high temps even when idling tried to reapply TIM with different techniques TIMs I used: Noctua NT-H1 and MX4 both are getting similar results.
CPU overheating also when in bios getting 41 degrees usually. Please share your thoughts is it a bad chip? should I RMA it or can something else be wrong? Maybe some setting in BIOS? i am not an overclocker so I am not sure but either way the CPU is getting warm.
I am using Asus Prime Z370-A. Thank you very much for your shared thoughts on this and tips. Have a nice day. Kind Regards Jan

Solution

Take the side off the case and see what the temps are.

That case isn't the greatest when it comes to airflow etc.

Hi Rigger922
The Fan which is mounted is NF-F12 PWM Focused Flow 120 mm max rotational speed 1500 RPM and with L.N.A. 1200 RPM
So I presume its an Air Flow Fan

You aren't using the LNA are you?

Hello Jankerson I am not sure where to check if i am using LNA should be turned off by default? one thing I am using is akasa cable through which all fans in case are connected and controlled by PWM
This one: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/45cm-akasa-flexa-fp5-pwm-5-fan-splitter-black-braided-cable-powered-via-4-pin-molex

Can it cause this issue?
Basically all of the fans in the case are controlled by CPU cooler PWM

The LNA is an actual fan cable that says LNA on it.

You need to plug the CPU fan directly into the MB CPU fan connection.

And why are you using that akasa cable thing?

The MB has plenty of fan headers.

the fans are fine then try what jankerson said also is that cable suitable to have that many fans running through it what is wattage capacity for that cable.secondly make sure the cooler is seated on the cpu properly and did you put either too much or too little thermal compound on it should be a pee sized drop or did it come with pre applied?

thanks for the replies guys the LNA low noise adaptor is not connected it is in the package with other things i get with the CPU FAN. I am using that because there are just three FAN connectors on the MOBO and I could not install the 4th one the only 4 PIN I got left on MOBO was AIO Pump PIN where FAN ran always to max.
It has also MOLEX connector which is pluged in from this reduction to the PSU, then PWM 4 pin to which CPU FAN is plugged in, and other 4 connectors for the FAN without the PWM so everything is controlled by MOBOs PWM 4 pin for CPU. I hope it is clear enough.
I tried to use different TIMs and different ammounts of it but the CPU still getting hot :-/ I was also trying to do my best to seat the heatpipe properly onto the chip but not sure if it is seated properly both screws are screwed in good.

Regarding that cable here is shown how it works:

Also as you can see it is connected to PSU with 12 V MOLEX which should be wattage of arround 24 watts if I am correct really not a pro when it comes to electricity...

I also removed the side panel as you asked getting now 37 - 45 when browsing the web without OC

Coffeelake is known to run hot, shouldn't be quite this hot at stock settings, but it's normal for them only thing i cna suggest if everything is in place then to get an AIO cooler see if that helps or try some better thermal compound.what motherboard do you have? alot of people are getting 70c+ with these cpu's even with water cooling you could Delid your processor but im not gonna recommend that just yet and its at your own risk you've been warned because it will void the cpu's warranty

So i got something like Duron with new tech? :D I will try to remove that reduction cable first repaste again with MX 4 and will get back to you but did not expect that with 4 fans especially when it comes to Noctua and 4 Corsair fans I wont be able to handle temps...
Was thinking about AIO but i heard its much noisier than classic FANS... so that would not be good option for me which TIM do you recommend i ve got three here noctua NT-H1, Arctic MX4, and something from CM which i did not even try since the one from CM was for the laptop i got previously do you recommend anything else? The Mobo i have is ASUS Prime Z370-A

Just do me a favor if you have an asus board check in your bios if asus multicore enhancement is on if it is turn it off and see what that does also AIO are not nosier depends what pump speed is at and what fans your use.

If its turned on by default it will be on since my bios is currently in default and even when I OC the CPU I only used automated OC so that might be the issue going to do that right away! thanks please god let this be the issue :D

ok it was not Enabled actually there is no option which says enabled it was on "auto" so the chip is now hot but I am going for a beer and when i ll come back i ll test it and will let you know if that helped. Thank you very much for your time guys hopefully this will help :) Also rigger can you tell me which TIM application is the best? x method or spread method or dot? thank you very much

Hello guys so I did what you told me to do with the Akasa cable now connected to FAN pin in MOBO and CPU cooler to CPU pin on MOBO and turned of multicore enhancement and the result is when the PC is idling I am getting from 30-40 degrees but when gaming it did not go higher than 65-70 which a big difference any other tips comes to your mind? I did not re-apply TIM since i ve done it like 5 times will try that later this month with my friend who is little bit more skilled with HW especially when it comes to TIMs

Either that or that akasa cable not sure will test in future. Do you think that it is worth it to buy another noctua FAN i can attach one from the otherside on the tower would that help? Or its not worth it?
