Hi! I'm Ed. I have an issue with a seagate 5 TB external drive that I had slipped off my laptop, not running, and now the power cord won't reattach. I have all my videos on there and would like to know, w/o having to spend a great deal of money, how I can access the info and transfer it to another external hard drive. The area where the power cord attaches is damaged and the power cord will not attach at all.

Solution
If you search you can find instructions to dismantle (teardown) these drives and remove the normal SATA HDD inside. This can be used inside a PC or with a SATA to USB adapter.

Provided yours is the latest version of the Seagate drives it is formatted GPT and you should be able to read the data on the drive. If you have the previous generation of Seagate drives it will have been formatted as MBR using a special bridging chip which lets it exceed the usual 2.2TB maximum for MBR. I think you can then only read the data via the Seagate circuit board. You can still use the HDD on its own but only after reformatting which will wipe your data.
