I have been hearing that the 9900K is a very hot chip. Is it really that bad? The 9700K runs just 100 MHz slower and it has no issues that I could find. Thanks!

Update: I was mostly talking about stock speeds on a 9900K.

Solution

at stock speeds, with only one core boosting to 5.0, you'll be fine with a decent cooler.
i've got mine at 4.9 on all cores with Vcore of 1.245V, used MSI's guide so all XMP, Enhanced and intel Turbo boost dis-abled, On a Noctua D-15S i'm seeing temps of low to mid 80s with the occasional spike to 91 or 92C, running P95 v26.6 small FFTs

i'm not going to explore 5.0 until i get a liquid cooling system in place

when Tom's did the Power Consumption Torture Loop they measured 249.7 watts

there's another review here on TOm's comparing the 8700k, 9700k & 9900k - use the search bar

Well here is what mine does at 5.0 GHz all cores with an NH D15. I am running mine on a AORUS Z370 Gaming 5 MB though, I believe the Z390 boards make them run hotter than they really need to. And no mine isn't throttling at all, performance is right where it should be or higher based on the reviews. Cinebench is 2199 @ 5.0 GHz and 2229 @ 5.1 GHz.

i was thinking about that post you put up just this afternoon - you never did tell us what stress test you were using. As i recall, you boasted your Vcore was 1.272V.

I can show similiar temps running 100% load when renderilng video files, but not prime 95 small FFTs

Prime 95 small FFTs

the math doesn't add up. I'm running 100 MHz lower clock speed, with a D15S, and there ain't a nickel's difference between your D15 and a D15S, yet you're showing temps on average a full 10C lower

either you're using a leaf blower on your cooler, or mine has a sandwich bag pulled over it

I have a wide open case with great airflow, one of the best cases on the market for cooling (CM Master Case 5 Pro) and 3 Noctua 140mm fans.

And the NH D15 with the 2 fans.

Case cover isn't off, the case has excellent airflow.

But I am running mine on a AORUS Z370 Gaming 5 MB.

The temps are what they are.

Would a 120 mm AIO water cooler work?

No way...

120mm AIO's are crap.

Waste of money and effort - again, a decent air cooler like a Noctua D15 or D15S will be fine if you aren't OCing

i'm going liquid cool only because i'm OCing (all cores) and i do a lot of video rendering - my computer on average runs 6-7 hours/day and sometimes 10+ hours at 100% load - heat is the destroying factor in electronics, so i want to keep my temps as low as possible
