[SOLVED] New computer build - Now it often crashes while playing game and I'm completely lost

Hello all. I've recently upgraded my computer. I'm running into an issue that in the middle of the game, my computer just.... freezes up. BGM continues, not SFX, Discord voice, etc stop completely. Screens frozen in place. This happens about once every few hours and I am beyond frustrated and hope you guys could shed some lights on what might be an issue.

* Windows 10 Pro

* i9-9900k @ OC to 5.0Ghz all cores

* Gigabyte Geforce Gaming OC 8G 2080, overclocked some with MSI Afterburner

* 850W PSU

* SSD#1 (old) - Operating System

* SSD#2 (new) - Games

I've recently upgrade the entire system besides main SSD drive (for operating system) and HDD for overall storage. Did not clean install Windows 10, but had to "reinstall Windows 10" over again. Clean installing Windows would be my absolutely last thing I want to do due to sheer amount of programs I've installed.

Symptoms:

* Computer would freeze while playing games

* No BSoD (except once)

* Everything on both of my monitors would freeze as is

* BGM sound of the game continues (but anything like SFX, Discord voice, etc no longer works). Only once that I've noticed sound artifact on BGM while freezing occurs.

* I leave my computer and a game run almost 24-7. While I do not attend on my computer after I go to bed (game still runs at 100+ fps until screens go to sleep, monitors shut off, sound not playing), the computer has not freeze once so far. However, if I'm playing and being active in game (in raid or dungeon), the computer would randomly freeze without much warning (besides some minor stuttering or almost-not-noticeable artifacts). More or less if I leave my mouse and keyboard untouched, everything seems to be fine.

Observations:

* According to HWInfo, CPU temp goes up to ~78 degree, but average around low 70s

* GPU doesn't go above 68 degree

* Sometimes, you can see a fraction of a sec screen flicker while playing game, or even when at 100 - 144 fps, you can see a noticeable stutter (like 0.2 second of graphic "freeze", then resumes)

Steps Taken

* Used DDU to reinstall graphic driver

* Also used DDU to remove all the older audio devices that I no longer use

* Updated Windows 10 to the latest version

* Updated to latest BIOS version

* Un-overclock the GPU entirely to factory default

* Drop CPU clock to 4.9Ghz (all core)

* Ran Prime95 to stress test CPU for ~5 minutes at both 4.9Ghz and 5.0Ghz

* Replace my graphic card with the old one (it still freezes)

At this point I'm at a loss. My next step would be disable on-board sound unit and install my old Soundblaster PCI card, but I am not hopeful it will fix any issues. Or completely undo-overclocking the CPU. Or even try to run some test on my SSD? I've tried to look through Event Viewers but I do not know enough which under "Error" and "Critical" are important, nor do I spot anything significant that might tip off the root cause (unless I've completely missed something here).

If you've read this thus far, thank you so much for your time. I hope one of you guys will bless me with a solution so I'd be done with this issue completely. Happy Holidays!

Solution

One thought was it maybe the new one,but looking at this it probably isn't. What brand gpu did you use before? If also Nvidia maybe try and reinstall the latest drivers,but use the advanced option,there check the "do a clean install" option,also only install drivers+sound+physics+usbc driver, uncheck the rest,also not install geforce experience. See how it does with this installed.

Setting XMP to enabled and overclocking the cpu are two different things.

Thank you so much for your response!

* I did undo the overclock. Unfortunately that did not resolve the issue. Overclock is now back on again.

* As far as Windows installation goes... it went like this

- Old build with Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate)
- Installed new motherboard, Windows 10 Pro screamed at me for not having an authentic version
- Tried to use old CD key. Didn't work. After a few days of trying, I gave up and bought a new Windows 10 Pro key
- Could not upgrade Windows 10 to newer version at all
- Decided to install Windows 10 over again, starting "fresh" (but not clean)
- Now I'm able to update Windows 10

* PSU -- Seasonic Prime 850 Titanium SSR-850TR 850W 80+ Titanium

* I believe I have XMP enabled for RAM with CPU overclocking. However, I believe that's off when I undo overclocking earlier for testing

Actually, the flicker looks like your clocks. I'd down clock them while your trying to find the problem. Try 'reset' game or 'set to default' (in the games). Write down your game settings before you do this. They will be gone, too. Problem with online games these days is the remember a crash or a stutter like a game setting and when the right criteria is met, it crashes or hic-ups the system.
Hope this helps.

Could you elaborate on "clocks"? I'm not too familiar with this. The game I'm playing is Final Fantasy XIV mainly, and I don't recall having any options as such.

Sorry. I meant to say, bring your overclocking speeds down in your gpu and gpu ram. If you're not overclocking your card, then there's no need to heed my answer.
