I need help learning how I go about determining if a cpu is compatible with my motherboard. Not afraid to do the research, just not sure what I need to research!

I've just experienced Oculus a couple days ago for the first time. I was blown away. I thought it would be fairly rudimentary at this point, and am please to be wrong. WANT!

I've just ran the compatibility tool (2/3rds down this page for anyone interested: https://www.oculus.com/rift/#oui-csl-rift-games=robo-recall) and it looks like my cpu isn't beefy enough to handle it. So I'm going to need to upgrade.

Current motherboard:
Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0

CPU I'm interested in:
AMD Ryzen 5 1600

Any help appreciated.

Solution
That motherboard is a completely different socket from what Ryzen uses.

For that old of a platform, there is no sensible equivalent CPU to a Ryzen 5 or 7.
CPU compatibility - https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M5A99X_EVO_R20/HelpDesk_CPU/

You absolutely CANNOT use Ryzen CPUs with your current motherboard.

If you want that CPU, you need a whole new system - new RAM, motherboard, CPU.

If you want to upgrade all that, post a budget so people know how much they get to work with.

Thanks for the infos. Can you teach me why I can't use the Ryzen? Is it the sockets? Is Ryzen not compatible with Asus?

Is there a comparable CPU to the Ryzen 5 1600 that I could use with my setup? My graphics card is more than satisfactory for Oculus.
