I found this used 1080 on ebay:https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-Windforce-GTX-1080/183616244536?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144
I can get a vega 56 new for around the same price.
Is this card worth buying used? I have a hunch that it is used for mining, but have asked the seller. (No response so far).

Hard to say, they are pretty reliable but it's always a risk buying second hand.
I have a MSI GTX 1070 that I got cheap from a miner, he sold 6 of them at once and I got a good price for mine. I was a bit nervous that it had been used for mining but after a a few months of trouble free use I'm felling a lot better about it, and the fans don't even run half the time because it stays under 60 degrees even while gaming quite often :)

So is the risk worth it, or should i buy the vega 56?

What resolution and refresh rate do you use, and what sort of games?

But honestly I am not going to decide for you if a stronger card is worth risking second hand, only you can do that. It may even still be under warranty though, not sure how these things work.
