[SOLVED] cpu not performing as expected

I recently upgraded my CPU to an i7 6700k. And while doing benchmarks I noticed that it was performing significantly below the average benchmark for its model. on PassMark performance test 9.0, my CPU scored 9200 whereas the average is 11795. if there is any reason for this i would love to know. thank you all

What motherboard and bios version specifically, power supply, and ram?

Also what cpu cooler? Did you clean top of 6700k and cooler? Did you reapply paste?

What was it the stock cooler for? A 6700k doesn't have one. It's probably overheating. Check temps when running benchmark. If it breaks 80c it could be throttling

it stayed within 30 mhz of 4ghz with the occasional drop to around 3700mhz for half a second

It should start at 4.0 and go above that if anything the fact it is going down to 3.7 means it's either getting hot, the vrms on the board are getting hot, or it's running out of power

Open side panel leave it off (point a fan at cpu socket if possible) and see if that helps, if it does it's temp related if not it's likely not enough psu, what GPU are you running?

I put money on the VRMs that board has like 4 phases from the pics I can find. It may run a 6700k but clearly not made for it.

Did you aim some sort of desk fan at the socket? Being 4 phase it'll probably need more than just open case to help of that's the problem at all

Eh 480w should be enough, its from a prebuilt ASUS system, the system was available with everything from the i5-6400 to the i7-6700, I would assume all had the same motherboard. Could just be settings related, probably had a 6400 in there before and maybe needs to reset the BIOS.
