MSI MOBO 10 sata ports 7-10 AHCI only?

Is there a preferred, drives/devices, etc... that would be more suited to go onto sata ports 7-10?

thanks in advance

If this is your question, then no any SATA device or drive will work. But that is principally drives.

If your question is can you set 7- 10 to ACHI only and 1-3 as IDE, then that answer is no you can't.

I have never really understood your question.

It's an MSI X99A SLI, one of the first X99 Broadwell-E boards for MSI anyway I think. (It is not a plus model)
Been through manual and what not and all I can see as far as I can tell that Ports 7-10 are AHCI / IDE only and seem to be 6Gbps.

Again, any Idea if these Ports 7-10 are for some type of drive configuration setup or just for things that don't need or have to be in a raid setup, maybe like DVD, BDR, OS/Programs, Media Cache, etc...???

Thanks, Here is a link to the board, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/X99A-SLI/Specification

sorry for the confusion

No, you got it right!

I was just thinking what are the SSD's or HDD's drive wise, that would go on sata ports 7-10 AHCI, only.
(or IDE but I wouldn't be going that route)

Maybe like sata ports 7-10 is a good place to put OS/Programs Drive and or Optical Drive(s), Media Cache, Samples, etc... type of drives that may not need to be in a raid configuration?
Maybe something like that?

Thanks

Asa far as the BIOS is concerned SATA is generic. It doesn't matter if it is is an a hard drive, SSD drive or hybrid drive. There are some additional limitations placed on the system drive. For example if you are using a M.2 SSD, you must use a motherboard that supports M.2 Drives. A PCIE adapter card can be used for data use but not for the system drive.

I'm Sorry, all the SSD's I would be using would be standard 2.5" SATA III Samsung 850's, though the board does have M.2 and U.2.

• Intel® X99 Chipset
• 10 x SATA 6Gb/s ports (2 ports from SATAe port)
- SATA1~6 support RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10
- SATA7~10 only support IDE mode and AHCI mode

• 1 x M.2 slot (Key M)
- Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s
- Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280/ 22110 storage devices

• 1 x U.2 port */ **
- Supports PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe storage

• 1 x SATAe port* (compatible with 2 SATA ports)*
- Supports up to PCIe 2.0x2

• Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology**

* SATAe port (include SATA5~6) will be unavailable when installing M.2 SATA storage in M.2 slot (for 40-lanes CPU only). SATAe port (include SATA5~6) will be unavailable when installing M.2 storage device in M.2 port (for 28-lanes CPU only).
** This function will be supported depend on the CPU.
*For 40-lanes CPU, it supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s

I think it's only the 860 Pro series that has mlc, below is a link to an AnandTech review of the SSD's.

I was just thinking with the board having 10 sata ports and ports 7-10 are AHCI only and what they could be used for Drive Wise.

I understand you could put basically any conventional HDD/SSD on 7-10 ports, I was just thinking of some type uses for the Non-Raid Ports.

In this post earlier I mention some examples, though I did not say they were examples, so here's an (Example, Thought, Pondering), maybe 7-10 Ports are AHIC only those ports might better use for drives such as OS, Optical DRV's., some type of extra Storage for something I don't know?

Though, since Ports 1-6 are Raid ready maybe they could stay clear for Drives you would want in a Raid (10, 5, 6, 1, drive pool) I don't know, just kicking a can down the road.

Thanks

Certainly you can configure the drives as you like. You may not need or want that many drives.
