Strange CPU thermals

My CPU thermals have gotten much worse for no apparent reason.
I have an i5 7600k overclocked to 5.2GHz and it used to peak at around 78°C at max load but for some reason it now goes as high as 98°C
so I took it down to 4,7GHz so that it wouldn't fry
And yes all the fans are working

It peaked at 78'C at 5.2GHz????? Or before you overclocked?

What kind of voltage are you pumping into it? 5.2GHz seems highly unlikely

What cooler do you have?

What workloads are you performing when it's hitting 98'C?

It was running 78°C after oc
It runs like 50°C at stock speeds
I don't remember the exact model of the cooler but its one of the mid-range noctua coolers
I have the core voltage set to adaptive (1,040V)
I usually just game on it and the CPU is
Usually at like 95% load

Check to see what your actual Vcore is under load. What were you running when you saw 78 C when you first OC'd? Are you running the same thing now when you're seeing 99 C?

I don't have a stress test but I do have realtemp that I was monitoring the thermals with, and considering the CPU is almost at full load when I game its practically the same thing
I just monitor thermals when I play Rainbow six siege since it's really the only game I have that actually loads the CPU to near 100%

Did you not do any stability/stress testing when you were overclocking?

Run Prime95 v26.6 small FFTs test, report back max temperature and Vcore.

I tested with prime95 at 5.2GHz and one core hit 100°C instantly but the other 3 peaked at 88, 92 and 93°C

For that change in temps, without changing the OC, I'd guess the HSF has come loose, or needs new TIM applied. I would reinstall the HSF with new TIM as your first step.

It sounds like the OC was never properly stress tested in the first place so it's hard to say if temps really got worse or they just started running different loads now that heat it up more.

For the 3rd time, what Vcore does the CPU hit under load?
