Hi there guys,

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find any definite answers.

I'm looking to upgrade a laptop 500GB HDD with a 500GB SSD. I have a 1TB external HDD that I was intending to use as a middleman via Macrium reflect to transfer the install of windows so re-installation of the OS wouldn't be needed.

Am I correct in thinking that;
a) this is possible
and
b) It shouldn't matter that the external drive is bigger (concerning changing partition size)
as the 500gbish partition is being copied, creating unallocated space on the 1tb external, and then copied off again onto the new 500gb drive, thus filling it as before?

Also worth asking, the external I have is the transcend storejet 1tb: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-Military-Grade-Shock-Resistance-Portable/dp/B005MNGQ6C

Will this drive work ok for this task or would I be better off buying an adapter/enclosure for the SSD and doing the swap that way?

Thanks.

Solution
Use macrium but create the bootable media and boot from it. Then IMAGE your drive not clone it to the 1TB. Then turn off, toss in SSD, reboot from drive, and restore that image to the SSD.

that is assuming he has an adapter to plug in the other drive. If it doesn't then he would need to use the 3rd drive.
