I sympathize with your issue, for I've discovered 26,000 files missing from my Seagate 3TB GoFlex. The files were written 2 years ago. The drive was on and connected to my PC for long periods of time. I never fully trusted the Seagate and thankfully kept backups.

In all honesty, I know that some "utility" has been updating ID3 tags. Could there have been a virus or other mechanism by which the files were "disappeared"? I dont know. Judging by some other posts I cannot rule out drive issues. To date, I have not resolved the issue. I suspect:
1) The Drive
2) Suspicious internet activity
3) A virus

To be sure a HARDWARE WRITE PROTECT SWITCH would render all vulnerabilities moot.

Dear Seagate: I would pay an extra $50 for HARDWARE WRITE PROTECT SWITCH. Please take note.

I can't comment about the drives you have mentioned but I have had bad experiences with large Seagate external drives. I had two fail within a matter of just a few months after purchase. In both cases all data was lost. I now back up everything. I'm not saying all Seagate external drives are bad as I have two small ones (less than 500GB each) and both have worked well for years.

I had the same problem with the Goflex cinema. I think it has something to do with the indexing on it. Anyway, i solved my problem by doing a disc repair (disc utility) on mac. It fixed the disc and all "lost" files where back. Not sure if check disc utility on windows will have the same result but it's worth the try.
