I've been looking at the Momentus® XT Solid State Hybrid Hard Drive recently and then I noticed that it is a laptop hard drive, I was wondering if it could be used as a Desktop drive as well, and if so would it be as powerful in comparison to other desktop drives as it seems to be in comparison to other laptop drives?

Hey Thinsos,

The Momentus XT states that it is a 2.5" form factor, so it will not work natively in you desktop as dallasjoh mentioned. However, if you use a 2.5" to 3.5" converter or a bracket, you can use them inside a desktop. Since the drive seems to be a mix of SSD and HDD, it is supposed to take best of both worlds. There are many reviews out there about transfer speed, access time, etc. Checking out how the drive fairs can tell you about how fast it is compared to other drives that are in the market today.

Hope this helps with your question a bit!

Hey Thinsos,

Happy holidays (belated)! That will depend on what the manufacturer rates the speed of the converter, however, most converters uses a simple bypass connection (does not use any chipsets). You can also use reference sites such as Newegg to find removable converter products and then find reviews of them!

Hope this helps you with your question!

The connector itself is identical to the one used for a desktop, so you can just plug it directly into your desktop. The only reason you need a converter is to mount the smaller drive into a larger bracket. The converter has nothing to do with the plug, so it has absolutely nothing to do with the speed.
