Hi folks! I have a Sony VGN-AW47GW with a NVIDIA® GeForce® 9600M GT GPU. I want to upgrade this. Can you help me find a modern GPU that will fit within the architecture of the laptop? I.e. physical size, power needs, etc.

Did you try to remove the old one yet ? In almost all cases you can't change a laptop gpu, to lazy to look if yours is.

In general laptops have customized GPU cards and there are no available replacements. Sometimes the GPUs are built into the motherboard, other times they have customized connectors and shapes. Some laptops do have replacements, but those are extremely rare and I've never heard of a Sony laptop that has this feature.

IF there is an upgrade card available it will be available from the original vendor (or they could point you in the right direction).

Logic is that the laptop manufactures integrates the gpu in the motherboard. So it is not possible to change the gpu .

Actually, Here is a links because I'm too lazy to explain Laptop and AIO GPUs.
http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

Summary: Alot of Laptops and AIO (all in one) Systems use MXM Cards. For instance My HP IQ770 AIO came with a 7600GS MXM 2.1 II GPU, I upgraded it to a 9600GT MXM 2.1 II GPU

MXM 2.1 is the type and II is denoting the size/shape/power connector in some cases. Read the link I posted.
