Windows 8 Hangs at Restarting. How Can I Fix This Problem?

While using Windows 8, users may face an issue where the computer hangs every time it is restarted. This might happen due to incorrect or bad clusters in the hard disk drive or due to some issues with the system files.

In order to rectify the issue, administrators must restart the computer in safe mode and initiate the scanning process using elevated privileges.

Since Windows 8 does not allow users to enter into the safe mode by pressing F8 or Shift + F8 keys by default, the legacy advanced boot menu must be manually enabled before the computer can be restarted in safe mode.

How to Enable Legacy Advanced Boot Menu?

To enable legacy advanced boot menu in Windows 8, step-by-step instructions are provided below:

    ■Restart the Windows 8 computer.
    ■Enter into the BIOS setup and configure the system to boot from CD/DVD Drive.
    ■Save the modified settings in BIOS and reboot the computer.
    ■Insert Microsoft Windows 8 bootable installation DVD into the optical media drive (CD/DVD Drive).
    ■When prompted to Press any key to boot from CD or DVD, press any key to boot the computer from DVD support.
    ■On the displayed Windows Setup box, click Next.
    ■On the next page, click Repair your computer.
    ■On Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot.
    ■On Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced options.
    ■On Advanced options screen, click Command Prompt.
    ■On the opened command prompt window, type C: and hit Enter.
    ■On C: prompt, type BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY command, and press Enter to enable legacy advanced boot menu.

    ■Once the command executed successfully, type EXIT command to close the command prompt window.
    ■Back on the Choose an option screen, click Continue to restart Windows 8 computer.
    ■Eject Windows 8 installation DVD from the optical media drive when done.


How to Fix Windows 8 Hanging at Restart

To fix this issue, step-by-step instructions given below must be followed:

    ■As the computer restarts, press F8 key continuously to display the Advanced Boot Options screen.
    ■On Advanced Boot Options screen, select Safe Mode by pressing down arrow and press Enter to start Windows 8 computer in safe mode.
    ■Once started in safe mode, log on to Windows 8 computer with the administrator account.
    ■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop window.
    ■Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
    ■From the displayed options, click Search.
    ■On the opened Search pane in the right, ensure that Apps category.
    ■On the same pane, type CMD in Apps field.
    ■From the displayed results on Apps window, right-click Command Prompt.
    ■From the displayed advanced options at the bottom of the window, click Run as administrator.
    ■On the displayed User Account Control box, click Yes to provide the administrator approval to open the command prompt with the elevated privileges.
    ■On command prompt window, type SFC /SCANNOW command and press Enter to perform the scanning of system files.

    ■Close the command prompt window when done.
