Configuring Wi-Fi for Maximum Security

The best security option for home Wi-Fi is WPA2-PSK (AES). It is the premium choice for Home level as it provides an optimum speed on Wi-Fi network as compared to WPA-PSK and WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK.

Additionally, the users can raise its security just over a passkey. Although one may provide passphrase or passkey to permit the use of Wi-Fi network but just a passkey is not enough. There is always a risk of leaking the passkey, resulting into use by unwanted users. There can be more security options which can be applied to make your network more secured.

Along with the passkey additional check posts, like limited bandwidth, permissions and network access can be deployed for enhanced security purpose. One may add limited systems to the list to which the Wi-Fi network is accessible, and marking the privileges for the devices. Even if the passkey gets leaked, the devices cannot access the network as it is not added to the trusted devices list.

A device is privileged by adding its IP address, MAC address and Device Name to the list of the devices allowed accessing the Wi-Fi. Now, only the systems with given IP address and/ or MAC address, can access the Wi-Fi network.

Steps to add security to Wi-Fi:

■Logon to your wireless router using correct credentials. NETGEAR N150 Wireless Router is used for this demonstration.

■From the left pane, click Wireless Settings under the Setup section.

■Select by clicking WPA2-PSK (AES) and give the Passphrase below.
