So, you're looking to record some gameplay footage to upload to all of your subscribers (five*cough cough*) and supply them with some more entertainment, however your computer is getting slightly outdated and you start noticing a bit of performance loss upon the usage of recording programs such as Fraps or HyperCam.
(It's 2013, folks. Not 2008. Please stop using HyperCam.)
Upon noticing this performance loss, you wonder how your video quality will turn out.
After reviewing it, there is only one word to describe what you just saw.
Ick.
Well, I'm here to end all of this frame stuttering and buffer lag with this magical new program that Nvidia has just released not too long ago known as ShadowPlay.
ShadowPlay is a program such as Fraps, but does not contain all of the component-straining and quality-decreasing properties.
NOTE: SHADOWPLAY ONLY WORKS FOR SYSTEMS WITH NVIDIA CARDS SERIES 600 OR HIGHER.
First off, let's show you how to install ShadowPlay.
To start off, you'll want to head over to http://www.geforce.com
And you'll see this screen:
Go ahead and click download in the upper-left, but you could always take the hard path and download the current version manually if you'd wanted to.
(Note: ShadowPlay is only available in the newest version of Geforce Experience, 1.7.0.0)
Once you've gone and downloaded the installer, follow the instructions throughout the installer and install the program.
After the installation is complete, bring up Geforce Experience.
In Geforce Experience, there will be 4 tabs. One labeled Games, one labeled Drivers, one labeled My Rig, and one labeled Preferences.
Go into the preferences tab, and find the side-section with more options to pick from.
Locate the one that is labeled 'ShadowPlay' and select it.
Note: if this button is not present, you are running an earlier version of Geforce Experience.
Here you'll find this screen, in which you can change the key toggles, location of the recording indicator, and your saving location.
All of these settings are fairly self-explanatory, so I won't explain them.
You might notice this little button that says 'ShadowPlay' with a camera next to it in the upper right corner.
When activated, this button brings up the advanced settings for shadowplay, shown here:
These advanced settings contain:
•An on/off switch
•An open button, letting you view past recordings
•A preferences button, leading you back to where we were before
•The Mode settings, allowing you to record both Shadow and Manual recordings
•The Shadow time, which I will explain in a second
•and lastly Quality/Audio settings, allowing you to choose between quality and audio sources.
The thing about ShadowPlay is that it has two modes, Manual, which is just like Fraps or HyperCam, and Shadow mode.
Shadow mode is just as it sounds, it's as if you leave a shadow behind you that is made out of gameplay footage. The footage is deleted after the shadow is gone. This is where the Shadow Time comes in, letting you choose the time that the shadow lasts, hence the application being named 'ShadowPlay'.
Now that you've customized and activated ShadowPlay in your settings, let's give it a test drive!
In this situation I'll be playing some Multiplayer Battlefield 4, one of my new favorite games.
Here we are in Battlefield 4, but wait. What's this? There's no recording indicator there!
Yes, even when you screenshot, the indicator does not show in it's specified location.
However, I did manage to have found a diagram of the Shadowplay indicators that you will see when recording. Thank you, Elric and the Tech of Tomorrow crew for providing this.
Remember your key combinations for recording and you should be fine. Remember, Alt+F9 for Manual recording, Alt+F10 for Shadow recording.
Here I have included a chart of a comparison between ShadowPlay and other commonly used recording softwares:
ShadowPlay is a very wonderful program so far, and it's only in it's beta phase. I will hopefully update this tutorial when the full version is released as well.
