How to set a file type to open with a specific program

Media Player File Type Configuration
By See all their Tutorials
If you're like me and hate how Windows 8 comes with full-screen photo/movie viewing applications and wants to change them to the default windows media player, then you came to the right place.

Here I'm going to show you how to set a specific file type to open with a specific program, such as opening a .pdf file with Adobe Reader, or opening an .mp4 file with Windows Media Player.

First of all, you're going to want to know how to get to Default Programs.

Step 1) Select the start button(Win7) or the search button in the charms bar. (Win8)

Step 2) When you're in the search bar, type in Default Programs and hit enter.

This screen should pop up:

Step 3) Select 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program'

This will bring you to another menu, with a whole ton of file types.
In this case, I'll be changing how I open .PDF files.

Step 4) Type in the file type you'd like to change the protocol for, i.e. typing in .pdf to locate it

This will highlight the file type you're looking for and make things a lot easier on yourself instead of having to scroll. Surprisingly, a lot of people forget about this feature.

Here's a picture of the .PDF file I've selected.

As you'll note, it's default program to open in is Microsoft's Reader. Which I do not like.

So, I'm going to double-click on the file type and it will bring up a menu. This is what it looks like in Windows 8.

From here, I'm going to select my program of choice, in this case, Adobe Reader, and click on it.

This will set my computer so whenever I open a .PDF file, it will open in Adobe Reader.

Thanks for viewing my tutorial, and have fun not using the terrible default programs.
