Many times when you try to format your USB pen drive using the Windows built-in formatting tool, Windows displays the ‘Windows unable to complete the format’ error and fails to format the drive.

One option to resolve the above issue is to go to the vendor of the device and get it replaced instantaneously. This can also be done by going to the nearest service center of the manufacturer of the USB pen drive.

The above mentioned solution is recommended if you have tried everything and all went in vain, and now you are looking for a last resort solution to get rid of your faulty USB device. Before you go ahead and get your faulty pen drive replaced, you should give one last try to repair your drive.

This tutorial teaches you how you can repair your faulty USB pen drive if the Windows built-in format tool fails to format the device whatsoever.

In order to help you rectify the problems that your USB pen drive may have, you are required to download a free third-party format tool. You can search the HP Format Tool on any of the available search engines of your choice using any of your favorite web browser. The HP Format Tool is not more than 100 KB in size and is a standalone portable executable file. This means that once you download the executable file on your computer, it does not require any installation in order to format the pen drives. Instead, you can simply initialize the program with the elevated privileges and can give the command to format the connected pen drive.

The step-by-step process to get the job done is given below:

■Make sure that you are logged on to the computer with the administrator account.

■Connect the faulty pen drive that you want to format.

■Download the HP Format Tool from the Internet and save its .exe file at a handy location. (Desktop for example.).

■Once everything is in place, right-click the downloaded HP Format Tool executable (.exe) file.

■From the displayed context menu, click the Run as administrator option.

■From the displayed User Account Control confirmation box, click the Yes button to provide your consent to initialize the format tool with the elevated privileges.

■On the opened interface, make sure that the connected USB pen drive is listed under the Device drop-down list.

■Verify if all the other parameters are set as per your requirements. (For example, the File system, Volume label, etc.).

■Also ensure that the Quick Format checkbox is unchecked. (You might want to uncheck the checkbox since the pen drive that you want to format is faulty, and doing a full format might be an added advantage in rectifying the issues that it may have.).

■Once this is done, click the Start button, and except any confirmation box that appears next to start the formatting process.
