One Windows Server 2012 Domain User Is Unable to Change the Account Password

This Tutorial addresses:
  • Windows Server
  • Configuration
As per the default configuration, after a new user account is created, the Windows Server 2012 prompts the user to change the password as soon as the user logs on to the computer for the first time.

However, many times the administrators configure the newly created user account otherwise. This means that they create a user account and set its attributes so that the password for the user account never expires, and sometimes they also prevent the user from changing the password.
In your case, it seems that the account has been configured in a way that the corresponding user is not allowed to change the password. If you want to remove this restriction from the user account, this tutorial will guide you through the process.

Note: Make sure that you really want to remove this restriction from the user account. If the policy of your organization doesn’t allow you, you can inform the user personally and can configure the account in a way that the user is enforced to change the password the next time the account is used to log on.

If you still want to allow a user to change the account password anyway, here is how you can get it done:

  1. Log on to the Windows Server 2012 Active Directory domain controller with the Enterprise Admin or Domain Admin account credentials.

  2. If not already started, initialize the Server Manager window from the bottom left corner of the screen.

  3. On the opened Server Manager window, go to the Tools menu from the menu bar.

  4. From the displayed list, click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  5. On the opened Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, from the left pane, expand the current domain name. (MYDOMAIN.COM for this demonstration.).

  6. From the expanded tree, locate the target OU that contains the domain user account that is unable to change the account password.

  7. Once located, from the right pane, right-click the target user account. (User-01 for this
    demonstration.).

  8. From the displayed context menu, go to Properties.

  9. On the opened user’s properties box, go to the Account tab.

  10. From the displayed interface, under the Account settings section, uncheck the User cannot change password checkbox.

  11. Click OK when done, and finally close the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

  12. Ask the target user to log off from the account and log back in.
