Windows 7 is probably the most used OS right now, windows 8 is on the rise, but there has been a lot of talk about Linux becoming more main stream. Now quite a while ago Linux released an open source OS called "Ubuntu" since it was released, more and more software has been made compatible with it. It is now being seen as a possible OS for gaming, thanks to the update where a variety of steam games are now compatible with Ubuntu. As for now, it's a great workstation OS, with great multi-tasking and even comes with free software that is equivalent to Microsoft Word and Excel. Overall, Ubuntu is a great operating system that is easy to install, and maybe you want to install it yourself, here you will find out how to install Ubuntu to run on your desktop.

To start off you will need the following items.
1. A computer running Windows
2. A USB drive with at least 1gb of space (you could also use a blank disk)
Once you have those two items, we can begin the process.

Step 1: Download Ubuntu. In this tutorial I will be using a disk instead of a USB drive. It is essentially the same process. I will explain any differences you will see if you use a USB.
First, insert your USB or disk into your computer. Next, go to the following website to download the OS-http:// Once you are on this website, follow these instructions on how to download and install the OS.

Here is what you should see when you select the link above. If not, navigate to the URL found in my search box.

Next, you will want to navigate to the download section of the website. Found here-

Select "Desktop" and you will see this page-

Choose the extended support, and choose 64 or 32 bit depending on what your system supports.

Next, select the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS button directly under the drop down menu. And it will link you to the donate page, you can donate if you like, but if not, select download on the bottom of the page. as seen here. You will be prompted with an option to save the file to a certain area on your computer, once you determine where you want it installed. Select save.

If you are using a disk like I am, it will prompt you with this window, select burn.

If it successfully burns, you should see this. Select close, and you are done with the download.

If you are not using a disk like me, and you are using a USB, simply download the file, and save it in the USB drive, then open it there.

Step 3: Once you downloaded Ubuntu onto the disk/USB, while the disk/USB is in your computer, go into it and open the file inside. You should be prompted with this window. Select install after changing the settings and username/password to your liking.

Once this is finished installing, you should see this, select boot later and select finish.

Step 4: The last step is to reboot the system, and it should give you the option between booting windows, or Ubuntu, select Ubuntu, and hit enter. You should be prompted with a log-in screen. This means you have successfully downloaded Ubuntu. Ubuntu is great software that will allow you to multi-task with ease and it also just spices up your computer, taking a cool visual route that is nice on the eyes after years of windows.

I hope this helped! Enjoy the new operating system!
