How Can I Release Mouse Cursor When It Is Stuck within Hyper-V Virtual Machine?

This Tutorial addresses:
  • Cursor
  • Virtual Machine
  • Windows Server
When you install a guest operating system in a virtual machine in a Windows Server 2012 computer on which the Hyper-V role has been installed and configured, the mouse cursor gets stuck within the guest operating system once you click inside the virtual machine. The mouse cursor remains stuck within the virtual machine until you press the default key combination on the keyboard. The default key combination to release the cursor is Ctrl + Alt + Left Arrow.

You are required to press the key combination given above to release the mouse cursor every time the cursor is stuck within the virtual machine, and you need to do so till the time you do not install the Hyper-V Integration Services within the virtual machine.

Assuming that due to some genuine reasons you do not want to install the Hyper-V Integration Services on the virtual machine that you are using for now, you can follow the instructions given in this tutorial to view and/or change the key combination that is used to release the mouse cursor from within the virtual machines.

Here is how you can view and/or change the key combination to release the mouse cursor from within the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V virtual machine in case it is stuck within its window, and the Hyper-V Integration Services are not installed:

  1. Using the appropriate account that has the required privileges, log on to the Windows Server 2012 computer on which the Hyper-V role is installed.

  2. If not already started, initialize the Server Manager window from the bottom left corner of the screen.

  3. Once the Server Manager window is initialized, from the left pane, click to select the Hyper-V category.

  4. From the right pane, under the SERVERS section, right-click the Hyper-V server from the available list.

  5. From the context menu that appears, click the Hyper-V Manager option.

  6. On the opened Hyper-V Manager snap-in, from the left pane, right-click the name of the server. (DC-01 for this demonstration.).

  7. From the context menu, make sure that the service is started and all the contextual options are visible. If the service is not started, you must click the Start Service option from the context menu, and then right-click the server name again.

  8. From the context menu, click the Hyper-V Settings option.

  9. On the opened settings box, from the left pane, under the User section, click to select the Mouse Release Key category.

  10. From the right pane, you can view the currently assigned mouse release key under the Release key section.

  11. If you want, you can also change the currently assigned mouse release key to something else from the same Release key drop-down list.

  12. Once you are done, click OK to save the changes if you have made any, and to close the opened box.

  13. Back on the Hyper-V Manager snap-in, start the virtual machines to verify the modified settings.
