How to Set Up Your Own Personal Cloud With Asus RT-AC66U

Setting up your very own personal cloud gives the user access to a potentially endless amount of data without the need to have all that data stored on their mobile device (such as smart phone, laptop or tablet). Storage on mobile devices has limitations. The latest and greatest iPhone 5S is limited to 64GB. Besides lugging around external hard drives and/or other forms of storage, having your own personal cloud is the only other real option out there. With a personal cloud, there is no other equipment that you have to carry with you besides the mobile device itself.

The Asus RT-AC66U wireless router can eliminate the limitations of storage space for mobile devices with the AiCloud feature. It allows you to connect an external USB hard drive directly to the router, giving you access to the content of the drive anywhere that you have an internet connection, even on a 3G/4G network. One thing that I feel compelled to warn you about, however, is that it would be very easy to go over your data allotments when accessing this data via a 3G/4G network. You wouldn't want to watch a 2GB movie every day. Your phone bill for that month would be more like a mortgage payment on a million dollar mansion. LOL

With all that said, let's get down to setting up AiCloud storage on your Asus RT-AC66U router. Below is a link to the RT-AC66U User Manual. Directions for setting up your AiDisk begin on page 48 and end on page 49. It is relatively simple to do.

To create a cloud disk:
1. Insert a USB storage device into the wireless router.

2. Turn on the Cloud Disk of your router by clicking on the AiCloud tab at the left of the router home page, then clicking the "on" button beside the Cloud Disk section. Here is what the AiCloud page looks like. You may have to zoom in a bit to read it.

3. Go to https://www.asusnetwork.net and enter the router login account and password. For better user experience, we recommend that you use Google Chrome or Firefox.

4. Now, on your mobile device, download the Asus AiCloud app from the App Store or Google Play, depending on your OS and enter your router login information.

Congrats! You now have your very own personal cloud!

It is worth noting that you can use any USB storage device to set this up. I have used everything from a 32GB flash drive to my current cloud storage in a 1TB WD External Drive My Book 1110.
