How Can I Turn On Windows Defender in Windows 8/Windows 8.1?

Windows Defender is by default turned on in both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 after the operating systems are installed on a computer, and no 3[super]rd[/super] party system protection application such as an antivirus is installed on it.

As soon as you install any third-party antivirus on a Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer, due to the built-in feature of many of the third-party antivirus applications, the Windows Defender is automatically turned off. When this happens, Windows 8/Windows 8.1 informs you about this with an information in the message box that pops up when you type Windows Defender in the Search field from the Charms bar.

If you have installed any third-party system protection application, and the Windows Defender is automatically turned off, it is recommended that you leave the settings intact. However, due to any reason, if you still want to enable Windows Defender, you must follow the steps given below:

    ■Log on to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 computer with the administrator account.
    ■Hover the mouse pointer to the bottom right for top right corner of the desktop screen.
    ■From the displayed Charms bar, click the Settings option.

    ■On the Control Panel window that opens up, click the System and Security category.

    ■On the System and Security window, from the right pane, click the Action Center category.

    ■On the Action Center window, under the Security section click the Turn on now button representing either the Spyware and unwanted software protection (Important) or Virus protection (Important) option. (When Turn on now button representing any of the above options is clicked, the Windows Defender is turned on.).

Note: In order to turn off Windows Defender, you must open the app and disable Windows Defender from within its interface.
