How to Change Administrator on Windows 8?

This Tutorial addresses:
  • Control Panel
  • Windows 8
  • Computers
Changing an administrator in Windows 8 might mean that either you want to change an account with administrator privileges to a standard user account that has very limited permissions, or you might want to convert a standard (non-administrator) user account to an administrator account that has all the privileges and rights on the computer.

Regardless of the type of change that you want to make to the target account on your Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer, you can get the job done by either going to the Computer Management snap-in, or from the Control Panel itself.

Since the Computer Management snap-in might not contain Local Users and Groups tree in some versions of Windows 8/Windows 8.1 operating systems, in this tutorial you will learn how you can change the account type right from the Control Panel.

Here is how you can change an account type in Windows 8/Windows 8.1:

  1. Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer with the administrator account.
  2. From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
  3. Once on the desktop window, hover the mouse to the top right or bottom right corner of the screen.
  4. From the displayed Charms bar, click Settings.

  5. From the options pane that appears in the right, click Control Panel.

  6. On the Control Panel window, click Change account type option under the User Accounts and Family Safety category.

  7. On the Manage Accounts window, click to select the user account whose type is to be changed.

  8. On the Change an Account window of the selected user account, click the Change the account type option from the left.

  9. On the opened Change Account Type window, click to select the Standard or Administrator radio button as desired.

  • 10. Once this is done, click the Change Account Type button to save the changes.
    11. If the target user account is already logged in, log off and then log back in so that the modified settings can become applicable.
