Cannot Get to Wireless Settings in Windows 8

There can be several reasons why you are unable to access the wireless settings while using Windows 8/8.1. One of the most commonly seen causes of these kinds of issues is that you might have disabled the wireless feature on your laptop.

Depending upon the brand and vendor of your laptop PC, different key combinations might be used to enable or disable the wireless feature on your computer. The best way to check if the wireless feature is enabled on your computer is to go to the Network Connections window and check if the wireless NIC is available. If the wireless network interface card is not present in the Network Connections window, it means that the wireless feature is not enabled on your device. You can access the Network Connections Window on your Windows 8/8.1 computer by pressing the Windows + R keys on your keyboard simultaneously, and by typing the ‘NCPA.CPL’ command in the Run command box that opens up.

Another reason why you might not be able to access the wireless settings on your Windows 8/8.1 computer can be that the appropriate drivers for the wireless NIC are not installed on the operating system.

In order to check if the appropriate drivers for the wireless NIC are present, you must follow the steps given below:

■Log on to the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer using the administrator account.
■From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
■Once on the desktop window, click the File Explorer icon from the taskbar.
■On the opened This PC window, from the navigation pane in the left, right-click the This PC tree.
■From the context menu that appears, click Manage.

■On the opened Computer Management snap-in, from the left pane, click to select Device Manager.
■From the right pane, expand the Network Adapters tree.
■If the wireless NIC is enlisted in the expanded list, the driver for the wireless LAN card is present. In case you cannot find the wireless NIC in the list, you might require the driver installation disk for the wireless LAN card, or you can download the appropriate drivers from the Internet.

■Once you have successfully installed the drivers, the wireless NIC icon will appear in the Network Connections window. You can then right-click the wireless NIC icon and can click Properties from the context menu to access and configure the wireless settings as required.
