It is designed by Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten, art by Kristoffer Zetterstrand and Markus Toivoven and music composed by Daniel Rosenfeld. On consoles, Minecraft is developed by 4J Studios.
But what does Minecraft look like?
The fairly unique design feature about Minecraft is that everything is made of blocks. Also, Minecraft allows you to build, mine and fight, either alone or with friends. There are different biomes and creatures (called mobs) which include animals, humanoids (villagers) and enemies, such as spiders, skeletons and creepers.
What kinds of mobs might I find?
Here is a list of some mobs you could find whilst playing Minecraft.
Pigs
Cows
Sheep
Spiders (cave or normal)
Spider Jockeys (enemies mounted on a spider)
Creepers
Ghasts
Blazes
Zombie Pigmen
Villagers
Squid
Horses
Slimes
Skeletons
This is by no means a complete list, there are many mobs you may find on your adventures.
Controls
These vary depending on the platform you are using to run the game. These are the default controls, although you may choose to customise them.
http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Controls has a useful list of controls for a few platforms.
Modes
There are 3 different modes you can play in Minecraft. These are Survival, Creative and Hardcore. Survival lets you play the "normal" game - you have to find all of the resources, essentially a 'story' mode, apart from the fact that there are so many things you can do with Minecraft that you don't need to get to the End, there are no limitations. And technically, Minecraft never ends properly! Creative allows you unlimited copies of each block or item. This mode is typically used for building, but can be used for other things. Hardcore is basically Survival mode, but made harder - you have less hearts, mobs do more damage and more. A more full list can be found at http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Hardcore .
What popular minigames are there?
There are loads of fun games and variations; to list just a few there is spleefing, survival games and hide and seek. Spleefing is where you are given a tool (usually a shovel) and you need to dig up the floor (usually snow or wool). There are sometimes many levels, and the aim is to knock everyone out of the world while staying in yourself! Survival games are basically the hunger games in Minecraft, and I'm sure there is no need to explain hide and seek!
