How To Enable/Disable Automatic Maintenance in Windows 8/8.1

Automatic Maintenance is a built-in feature in Windows 8/Windows 8.1 that automatically maintains and optimizes the computer when the system is in idle state, or at the scheduled time that is by default set to 2:00 a.m. everyday.

Although the Automatic Maintenance automatically optimizes the computer without any user intervention, there are a few things that must be kept under consideration while leaving the feature enabled in home PCs.

Points to consider:

[listNum]■Additional amount of processing is required when the Automatic Maintenance process is going on.
■The computer must be powered on, and must be in idle state before the automatic maintenance process initializes.
■Windows 8/Windows 8.1 never asks for consent from any user before initializing the Automatic Maintenance.

Since the office computers are recommended to leave powered on 24x7, the default configuration of leaving the Automatic Maintenance enabled should do no harm at all. On the other hand, the home PCs are not always powered on, and neither are they heavily loaded by the processes or data. Therefore it is recommended that you should disable the Automatic Maintenance in home PCs in order to avoid processing overhead.

After the Automatic Maintenance is disabled in the home computers, you can manually optimize your PC by manually initializing the disk defragmentation, CHKDSK command, etc.

In order to disable the Automatic Maintenance in your Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer, the steps given below must be followed:

■Log on to Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer using administrator account.
■From the Start screen, hover mouse to the bottom-right corner of the screen.
■From the Charms bar that comes up, click Search.
