Setting Processor Affinity for a Process in Windows 8/Windows 8.1

Setting processor affinity for a particular process means that you are binding the process with a particular core or cores of the processor if it is a multicore processor ( e.g. Core2 Duo or Quad Core). For example, if your processor is quad core, you can set the processor affinity for MS Excel with the two cores of the processor. This ensures that only the bound cores of the processor are used by the MS Excel program every time it is initialized.

The advantage of setting the processor affinity is that you can allow the other cores of the processor to work on different processes in order to improve the overall efficiency of the computer as well as the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 operating system.

Setting the processor affinity is a simple task that requires the administrative rights on the computer. In order to set the processor affinity for any process in your copy of Windows 8/Windows 8.1 computer, you must follow the steps given below:

■From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
■On the desktop window, right-click the taskbar from the bottom of the screen.
