Here is a small description/discussion:
While creating a new user account in Windows 8/Windows 8.1, you can specify a single word name such as Tom as a login name, and can provide a full name, i.e. first name and last name in the Full name field. E.g. Tom Smith.
The Full name field is not available while creating a new user account during the Windows 8/Windows 8.1 installation. Therefore you must get this done manually after the operating system is successfully installed, and you are logged in.
Until you do not manually make the above changes for your user account, Windows 8/Windows 8.1 would continue displaying the single name, i.e. the login name for your user account.
Here is how you can specify a full name for your user account in Windows 8/Windows 8.1:
- Log on to Windows 8/Windows 8.1 using any administrator account.

- From the Start screen, click the Desktop tile.
- Click to open File Explorer icon from the taskbar.
- On the opened This PC window, from the left pane, right-click the This PC tree.
- Click Manage from the displayed options.
![]()
- Once the Computer Management snap-in opens up, click to select Local Users and Groups tree from the left pane.
![]()
- From the middle pane section, double-click the Users container.
- From the displayed users list, click to select and then right-click the user account that is to be modified.
- Click Properties from the displayed context menu.

10. In the properties box, ensure that General tab is select.
11. Enter the full name of the selected user in the Full name field.

12. Click OK to save the changes.
13. Close all the opened windows.
14. Sign out and sign back in to view the modified changes.
