Prevent Facebook Messenger from Accessing Your Phonebook

This Tutorial addresses:
  • Messenger
  • Facebook
Normally, after Facebook Messenger is installed on your Android smartphone and is in the process of initial setup, it prompts you to sync your phonebook with the app. When you do so, all the members from your phonebook who are also using Facebook Messenger can be viewed in the ‘PEOPLE WITH MESSENGER’ list within the Messenger app. With the help of this configuration, you can remain in contact with your friends, and exchange messages with them even if you are not able to call them. In other words, you can use the Messenger to converse with your friends even if they are offline, and the messages are delivered to them instantaneously.

Generally you might not want to prevent the Facebook Messenger from accessing your phonebook due to obvious availability and connectivity reasons. However, if you want to do so for testing purposes or for some other privacy issues, you must un-sync your phonebook from the Messenger to get the job done.

Here’s how:

  1. Turn on your Android phone.
  2. Tap the menu icon to go to the apps list.

  3. Locate and tap the Messenger app icon.

  4. From the next interface that opens up, tap the Settings icon (gear icon) from the top-right corner.
  5. On the Settings interface, tap the Synced contacts option.

  6. When the Synced contacts popup box comes up, tap the OK button to provide your consent to stop the messenger from accessing your phonebook.
