Chromecast is a great way to stream audio or video content to your TV from compatible mobile and web apps. However, before you decide to purchase Chromecast and start casting to your TV, you will want to make sure your router is compatible with the system. Chromecast uses Wi-Fi to broadcast the content from apps to your television, so an incompatible router can result in the system not working at all. Here’s how to verify your router compatibility—without finding out the hard way.

Step 1
Make sure you know the exact make and model of your router. You should be able to learn this information from simply looking at the unit and searching for product identifying information. If you are looking to buy a new router for use with Chromecast, simply keep a list of your potential purchase options so that you can check them against the Chromecast compatible routers.

Step 2
Visit Google’s Chromecast support page to check the compatibility of your router with Chromecast. Google has helpfully put together a long list of the routers that are compatible with its Chromecast device. From Asus to Belkin, Cisco to D-Link, Linksys to Netgear, the list includes most of the big internet networking companies and their flagship router products.

Recap
It’s frustrating that Chromecast isn’t compatible without routers, but Google has at least made it easy for you to learn whether or not your router will work with the system. Keep in mind, though, that most of the routers not supported by Chromecast are probably older devices that may or may not be out of date. If your router isn’t on the Chromecast list, maybe it’s time to consider getting a new router anyway.
