Hi,

Before Starting this process please take a backup of your hard disk because we are going to delete all the partition from the hard disk.

if you want to install windows 8 or 8.1 from XP or Windows 7 or if you bought a laptop that comes with windows 8 and you changed it to windows 7. Again now you want to install windows 8 or 8.1 in the same system, follow the below instructions.

Step 1: Create a Bootable Pendrive using Rufus
(Don't use any other tool to convert the USB to bootable because if you convert the USB with Rufus you will see one additional option in boot menu i.e (UEFI: "your USB name") if you use command prompt to convert a pen drive to bootable, you will not see this option.)

Step 2: Copy the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 setup file and paste it in the USB

Step 3: Restart your system and select boot from USB
(In boot menu you might see two options for the USB one is with UEFI in front of the name other is normal one. For example:
1. UEFI:Sandisk cruser blade (Select this)
2. Sandisk Cruser blade (if you select this option you will install windows 8 or 8.1 in MBR disk and not in GPT)

Step 4: While installing choose upgrade and click next

Step 5: Now an error message will pop-up saying that you can't install the OS on the selected hard disk or something...

Step 6: Click Ok,

Step 7: Delete all the partition in your hard disk
(Now you will see the entire hard disk space is un-allocated and the warning message is disappeared from the bottom)

Step 8: Create a New partition by clicking the New button, now you have successfully converted the hard disk from MBR to GPT.

Step 9: Now click the newly created partition and install windows 8 or 8.1

Step 10: After couple of Reboots your installation will finish.
(You may see an error or warning message in the bottom left of your windows 8 or 8.1 desktop screen saying, "secure boot is not configured correctly")

Step 11: Go to bios and enable secure boot option

Problems

if you bought a laptop that comes with windows 8 and you changed it to windows 7. Again now you want to install windows 8 or 8.1 in the same system, you may face the following problems. (This is from my expereince, my laptop is samsung NP370R5E-S05IN, my laptop initially comes with windows 8 but i changed it to windows 7, recently i try to re-install windows 8 and faced lot problems)

Problem 1
If you enable secure boot in a MBR hard disk, your USB drive will not show in Boot priority settings page. Even if it is show it will not boot from USB.

Solution
Do not enable secure boot option before following the above instruction

Problem 2
Even if you disable secure boot option and still can't boot from USB,

Solution
Check this option under the secure boot option in BIOS

1. CSM
2. UEFI
3. CSM or UEFI (enable this option and boot from USB)
