How to set your default programs in Windows 10

It's always handy to have a a particular application manage a file or file format within your platform. The folks over at Microsoft realized this and have implemented that feature within OS. Yes, you guessed right, you can set which application's handle which files/file formats from within OS and have them set to default all in one convenient screen.

    ■Open "Stat Menu" by clicking the "Start Button" in the lower left corner of the screen or tap the "Windows" key on your keyboard

    In the Start Search Field type settings

    Press "Enter" or click on "Settings"

    ■On the settings window click on "System"

    On the left pane click on "Default apps"

    ■A list of applications and the features that they handle appear on the right side panel.

    Changing the application that handles a task can be accomplished by clicking on the app under the task

    And selecting a compatible app in the expanded menu to the right

    ■Scroll down to the very end to see a list of options to assign your default applications.

    You can either assign your application to handle a file via a protocol or a file type.

  • a| click on "Choose default apps by file type" to assign an application to handle a particular file extension.

    e.g: Assigning Photoshop or illustrator to handle .PNG files only while you want Windows Photo Viewer to handle .JPG files only.

    b| Click on "Choose default apps by protocol"

    This will assign an application to a particular command or link when you type in your search bar or when clicking an email extension/link in a document or your browser.

    c| You can also set "defaults by app".

    Clicking on the up arrow next to the address bar

    Takes you to a page where you can assign your auto play options.

    ■Click on "OK" at the bottom right hand corner for "defaults by app" to back track to "Default apps" in "System".
