How to Resize Partition using Disk Management

Disk management is an inbuilt feature included in Windows 8.1, 8, 7, & Vista. With this functionality, one can shrink and extend partition. Besides, it enables you to create a new volume. In this tutorial, I will provide steps on how to resize partition with disk management in Windows 8.

Steps to Shrink a volume:
Step 1. Open Disk Management by pressing Windows key + X.

Another way to open disk management is type diskmgmt.msc in Run box (Win key + R to open Run box)

Step 2. In Disk management window, right click on the drive and select Shrink Volume as shown in below figure.

Step 3. A new Window will be open, fill the required details:
Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB

Step 4. Once you clicked on shrink button, the unallocated space will be displayed. You can use this space to make a new partition.

Steps to Extend a Volume:
Extending a partition means you can add more space to the drive. The adjacent unallocated space can be added to the volume using the below steps.

Step 1. Right click on a partition which needs to be extended. Now select Extend volume as shown below.

Step 2. A new Extend volume wizard will be shown. Click next.

Step 3. This step requires amount of space by which partition is to be extended.

Step 4. Click finish to complete the process.
