With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft introduced Windows Virtual PC which is a client virtualization application and is used to create & run multiple guest operating systems simultaneously on the host Windows 7. Besides, you can run virtualized version of Windows XP known as Windows XP mode which enables you to run Windows XP compatible applications on Windows 7. In this tutorial, I will explain steps to run Win XP virtual machine on Win 7.

Follow the below steps to run Windows XP mode on Windows 7 by using Virtual PC

Step 1. Download and initialize Windows Virtual PC from Microsoft site.

Step 2. Download Windows XP mode from Microsoft site.

Step 3. Install Windows XP mode by double click on it.

Step 4. Once installation has been done, a new Windows XP Mode wizard is displayed. Click next to proceed.

Step 5. In this step, you will have to specify the install location for the virtual hard disk (VHD) file of Win XP.

Step 6. This step starts installing the virtual hard disk file on a defined location.

Step 7. Now click finish to exit setup and launch Windows XP mode.

Step 8. Accept license terms and click next.

Step 9. Type the password and click next to proceed.

Step 10. Click start setup to run Windows XP mode on Virtual PC.

Step 11. You will have to wait for few minutes as Windows XP mode is being setup.

Step 12. Now you can use Windows XP mode on Win 7 with Virtual PC as shown in below image.

Step 13. Windows Virtual PC, Windows XP mode, and Windows XP applications will be shown in the win 7 program list.
