Eying that epic Big Boy launcher in the shop but your pockets are a little light? or maybe you just want to buy every vendor out there out of ammo, Well here's how you'll be able to do both of these things!
Step 1) Build near water. You'll need to get a settlement near a source of water, preferably a big one. I find Sanctuary to be great for this. Lots of water in the river and you'll always have this settlement.
Step 2) Gather building supplies. You're going to need to gather up a bunch of resources to build both water purifiers and power plants. Oil, copper, ceramic, and screws are going to be the most needed here, but you can get a lot of these just by scrapping everything you find right here in Sanctuary, at least enough to get you started. What are we starting you ask? We're going into the water business, that's what.
Step 3 Set up a water purification plant. All along the river we are going to be setting up water purifiers using the resources we have gathered, the more the better. Make sure you have enough power plants to run them all as well, and you are set for life now. As you go in your game you can always gather more and more resources and keep expanding your operation here as well, to earn caps even faster.
Step 4) Stockpile the water. But how do you get the caps? You go out and leave your settlement for a while, go do a quest, explore, anything. When you come back check your workbench inventory and there should be a nice stockpile of purified water here waiting for you, depending on how many of the purifiers you have going.
Step 5) Profit! Now you just take that nice stack of water out to the nearest store and sell away. Trade it for other things you need, what have you. When they run out of caps, move on to the next merchant. By the time you are done you can probably head back to your settlement and there will be more water waiting for you to keep going until you have as many caps as you want!
Also, be sure to place some defense turrets around your settlement, so that the defensive rating of your base is higher than the food and water production combines. If you forget to do this for too long, raiders will come and destroy your water farm and you'll have to rebuild.
