How to fix laggy performance in Fallout 4

Is your computer lagging out as soon as that super mutant is bearing down on you with a rebar club? Are you barely able to aim due to choppy performance? Then this is the guide for you! With a few tweaks, this game is playable on a lower range rig, and I’ll show you how.

Step 1)Update graphics drivers. Are you graphics card drivers up to date? Double check, this is a very important step and can really go a long way to making things run that much smoother. Depending on what kind of video card you have installed, this can be done directly from the Nvidia or AMD website.

Step 2)Change windowed options. When you launch the game, run it in borderless windowed mode at the maximum resolution. This can be set up by launching the game and going to options, there will be two check boxes at the bottom to check off.

Step 3)Turn the settings down. All of them; crank them all the way down and see how many fps you are getting. If you are satisfied with the performance once they’re turned down, fine tune them upwards a bit to get more out of it as you go, to see just how much your computer can handle while still giving you good frame rate. All graphic options can be fine tuned in the in the launcher options when you first open the game.

Step 4)Set Priority. Open the game and then open your task manager. Find Fallout 4 under processes and rick click on this. There will be an option for priority here. If you set this to ‘real time’ you should see some further improvements.

Hopefully, following these steps will improve upon your performance in game. See you in the wasteland!
