How to stop wake timers in Windows 10

Wake timers can be useful or an annoyance depending on how you use your computer. For laptop users or those who prefer to make the PC sleep instead of turn off, it can be a royal pain. Getting up in the morning or taking a laptop out of the bag to find it had woken sometime during the night is something we all want to avoid. So here’s how to stop wake timers in Windows 10.

First thing to do if find out why the computer woke up. Do this before any reboot of the computer otherwise the record is wiped.

Stop wake timers in Windows 10
1. Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘powercfg -lastwake’.
3. Identify the device from the Wake History Count.
4. Type or paste ‘powercfg -devicequery wake_armed’. To identify which devices are able to wake your machine.
5. Open Device Manager and right click the device(s) noted in ‘lastwake’.
6. Click Properties, Power Management and uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.
7. Repeat for all devices identified in the wake_armed step.

This should prevent devices from waking up your computer but there is one more step to complete.

Stop important wake timers in Windows 10
Windows 10 brought with it ‘important wake timers’. Unfortunately, what Microsoft regards as important isn’t always what users regard as important. It’s a useful idea to prevent this extra timer while we’re adjusting these things.

1. Navigate to Settings, System and Power & sleep.
2. Select Additional power settings, then Change advanced power settings in the Preferred plans section.
3. Select the Change advanced power settings link.
4. Navigate to Sleep and open it up.
5. Select Allow wake timers and select Disable.
