Looking to get the best possible turrets for defending your settlements from raiders? The further south you go from vault 111, the harder the raiders that come after your settlements will be. To help you with this, the game has provided you with better turrets in the form of mk 1, 3, 5, and 7 heavy machine gun turrets. A heavy machine gun turret mk7 is almost the same damage potential as a missile turret, but require less resources and no power supply. It's going to depend on where your settlement is located as to what is the best turret for the job though.

Step 1) Get the perks needed.
The first thing you are going to need is the required perks to even place either of these turret types. The heavy machine gun perk is going to require one perk in gun nut in order to place, and the missile turret requires four ranks in the same gun nut perk.

Step 2) Know your settlement.
The turrets you are going to be using depends largely on your settlement. If you are sitting in Sanctuary, you can only get mk1 heavy machine gun turrets, which are far inferior to the missile launcher turrets. However, if you are further south, it might be possible to get the mk7 turrets with a few tries. But how do you tell? Before you place the turret, rotate it so that you can see the markings on the side. This will tell you what mk the turret is going to be when you place it. Since it shows -before- you place it, you can determine if you want to or not. This is completely random though, you could be in a settlement that can get mk7s, and it'll give you a mk1. Your best bet is to switch to a different turret and then back, and see what mk it is now. Do this a couple of times and you should get a good idea of what you can get. Also, try this on the most south side of the settlement that you can, it's entirely possible the center of the settlement won't get you mk7s, but the far south side will! Then, once you've placed them, you can always move them where ever they are needed.

Step 3) Make sure your defense rating is adequate for the settlement.
Now that you are placing the best turrets for the settlement, make sure you place enough of them. Each turret is going to give you a defense rating, the total is shown along the top of the screen. This total defense rating needs to be higher than your food and water ratings combines. So if you are producing 10 food and 10 water in this settlement, then you are going to need a defense rating higher than 20. The higher the defense rating is the less chance you are going to have of someone attacking in the first place.

There you have it, follow this guide and keep those turrets in working order, and your settlements should be good enough to look after themselves when they are raided!
