With the new expansion of Automatron, you now have the option to build your own robot companions, and fully customize them!

Step 1) Get the workbench recipe.
In order to even get started, you are going to need to build the workstation to do this. You don't start with it though, so you'll have to go out and get it. Head towards Wattz Consumer Electronics and you should pick up a distress call on your Pip Boy. Listen to it and you'll get the quest 'Mechanical Menace.' This will lead you to a caravan being attacked by hostile robots. Once you have fought them off you'll find the sole survivor of the caravan, Ada. She will supply you with the recipe to build this workbench, as well as join you as a new companion.

Step 2) Build the workbench in one of your settlements.
This workbench is the largest of it's type in the game, and due to this you almost have to build it outside. Trying to build it in doors is going to be a tough fit, and making any of the larger robots at it may cause them to get stuck indoors because they're too big to get through them.

Step 3) Get the perks to go with it.
You won't be able to alter the robots you build much without any perks. You'll need the first two ranks of robotics expert, 3 ranks in Science!, 3 in blacksmith, 1 in gun nut, and 4 in armorer to fully unlock all of the different parts you can craft here.

Step 4) Build or modify your robots!
The crafting menu is very similar to the weapon and armor modding workbenches, you just need to choose the parts you want to add on to your existing robots and craft them. You start with Ada, and you'll need to bring her along for most of the quests for this DLC, so I would suggest starting there. If you want to build your own robots though, you can go ahead with that as well, when you first access the workbench it will ask you what robot to change, with the option of 'build a new robot' at the bottom. Just select that and you'll have a fresh new unarmored protectron at your disposal.

Get wild with the options out there! You can make all sorts of different robots capable to handling all sorts of situations with this menu, experiment, and find out what works best for you.
