Looking to get Curie as a companion? You'll need to complete the quest Hole in the wall to do so.
Step 1) Tour vault 81.
Find vault 81 and head inside, you may need to bluff your way in by saying you are a fellow vault dweller. Once inside, explore. Talk to anyone you see who may look important. Give blood in the clinic, take the tour with Austin, pick up the 'Here, Kitty Kitty' quest from Erin. Once this is done, leave the vault for at least 24 hours, maybe longer and go do some other quests just to be certain. When you come back head to the clinic and you'll find out Austin has been bitten by a mole rat and is very sick.
Step 2) Head into the secret Vault 81.
You'll be shown to a secret door near the reactor to access the secret levels of the vault.
Step 3) Avoid being bitten.
During this quest you are going to be going up against Mole rats, diseased ones, who are tougher than the usual type you'll find in your travels. One bite from these rats can give you a -permanent- negative ten to your health so it is best to fight from a distance and be overly cautious. If you do manage to clear out the molerats without getting bitten at all, it's going to make the end of this quest a lot easier.
Step 4) Find Curie.
You'll find a robot named Curie once you get further into the vault, who has manufactured a cure that will work for Austin, but there is only one dose of the antidote left.
Step 5) Bring the antidote to Austin.
If you contracted the disease from a mole rat getting the cure, now is where your decision gets a bit tough. If you choose to give the antidote to Austin, you'll have the negative 10 to your health forever, or you can take the cure yourself, and everyone in the vault will blame you for his death.
Either way, Curie will offer to come with you for the rest of your journey once the quest has been completed.
