Users who upgraded to Windows 10 from previous versions have occasionally seen the Unmountable_boot_volume error in Windows 10. Fix the unmountable_boot_volume error in Windows 10
First let’s check the disk as errors could be causing the issue and could also compromise any repairs we might make.
1. Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘chkdsk /f /r’. This will check the drive for errors.
3. As you are checking the boot drive, you will be prompted to schedule the check after a reboot. Type ‘Y’ and hit Enter.
4. Reboot and let the check proceed. It might take a while but will eventually tell you if the drive is erroring or whether it is operating normally.
If your drive is running error free, let’s try scanning the file system.
1. Open a CMD window as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘sfc /scannow’.
3. Let the process complete and follow the on-screen instructions should it find any errors.
If the error still appears after these two steps, let’s try and fix the master boot record.
1. Boot from your Windows 10 installation media
2. Select ‘Repair my computer’ when prompted and then ‘Troubleshoot’.
3. Select ‘Command Prompt’.
4. Type or paste ‘bootrec /RebuildBcd’.
5. Type or paste ‘bootrec /fixMbr’.
6. Type or paste ‘bootrec /fixboot’.
7. Type or paste ‘Exit’.
If this final step doesn’t cure the Unmountable_boot_volume error, you’re going to have to try a repair installation of Windows 10.
