There are hundreds of ways to optimize the performance of Windows 10, from disabling services and removing apps to booting from an SSD and increasing your RAM. While faster hardware will undoubtedly speed things up, I am more in favor of doing what you can with what you have. So here are three tips to optimize boot performance of Windows 10.

Reduce Time to Display List of Operating Systems
If you upgraded Windows 10, your boot record may still have references to Windows 7 or 8. You may even see the boot option to select your OS of choice. If you don’t need it anymore, removing this can significantly speed up boot time.

1. Type or paste ‘msconfig’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to the Boot tab and look for the Timeout box on the right.
3. Set this to 3 seconds (the minimum allowed).
4. Click Apply.

Control apps that load at boot

Talking of the time it takes Windows 10 to boot, let’s check what is set to boot with the operating system.

1. Type or paste ‘msconfig’ into the Search Windows box if you closed it.
2. Navigate to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
3. Check the applications that have ‘Enabled’ indicated under Status.
4. Double click to disable those not necessary at boot. Make sure to leave your firewall, antivirus and any essential programs enabled.

Speed up application launch at boot
You may notice when you boot your Windows 10 machine, the desktop appears quite quickly but some applications are unusable for a little while. This is to make you think Windows boots faster than it actually does. If you want certain applications to be available right away, try this.

1. Type or paste ‘regedit into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize’.
3. Set the key to 0 or create the key if it isn’t there.

To create a key, right click Explorer and select New, then Key. Make it a DWORD value and call it ‘StartupDelayInMSec’. Set the value to 0.
