If you are the only person to use your computer and there is little or no chance of someone else getting hold of it, you can disable the lock screen to speed up using your computer just a little more. It is also one less thing you need to do when you use Windows. So here’s how to enable or disable the lock screen in Windows 10.

Enable the lock screen in Windows 10
The lock screen should be enabled by default in both a new machine with a clean install of Windows 10 or an upgraded one. If yours isn’t, here’s what to do.

1. Type or paste ‘regedit’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows.
3. Right click the in right pane and select Key.
4. Call it ‘Personalization’.
5. Navigate into the Personalization key in the left pane, right click it and select New, then DWORD (32-bit) Value.
6. Call it ‘NoLockScreen’ and give it a value of 1.

Once you reboot, you should load directly into the Windows desktop without having to log on.

Disable the lock screen in Windows 10
To disable the lock screen, simply change that DWORD value to 0.

1. Type or paste ‘regedit’ into the Search Windows box.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization.
3. Change the value to 0.

This will prompt the lock screen every time you wake it from sleep or the screensaver where you will need to enter your password to access the computer.
